Traffic on the streets

Post by Likvidator »

Is it possible to replace conventional traffic on the custom cars? For example Escort, Grungy, ChevyS10PU

You mean replacing existing drones with playable cars, right?

I believe this should be doable as both drones and cars share the same formats (h, hie, mshs, dcol) but as far as I can remember, I don't think anyone ever attempted this..!

You can give it a go by unpacking the content of the DRONES.PAK files (with program pakrat2), and trying to replace files with ones from a car. Pretty sure it won't be too easy though!

How to remove drivers from the car, or make them invisible? How to improve the quality of the car that was not 512x512? 1024x1024

I guess the easiest way to hide the driver is to make the windows non-transparent. Else you can indeed make the driver part of the texture transparent. Sometimes that induces a Z-fighting issue (mesh triangles blinking kinda).

As for the quality of the textures, make sure you run the game in hires mode (with the -f command line, if you're on GOG or Steam, there should be a launch option for that). Then it's possible to resize the TGA textures too. Extract files from the pak into the folder and try to scale up the textures with a deep learning neural network ai thing if you want even more details? Like Waifu2x, SRGAN, etc.

You know what it is, there is such a version as "TDR 2000 Super Mod" it was created by the Russian man NickJG-7.PRO. Most importantly that this man made all drivers invisible, and improved the quality of the most car. I wrote to him, but he doesn't answer. That is, he reads my messages, but ignores.

I can't find where to download this mod. My guess is that he either turned the driver invisible by editing the texture, or somehow edited the CarDescriptor.txt of each car to remove the driver model (last line I think), I don't know if this works.

Also I don't know what you mean by "improving the quality of most cars", it seems to me like all he did was pack up addon cars and skins made by other people.

That link tries to make me download a 500kB executable, too shady for me.

Had a quick go at upscaling the Eagle Mk.4 skin to 1024x1024 via Torchlite+Photoshop, also hidden the driver but as I feared there's Z-fighting issues (front right wheel for example). I must say I don't get why someone would want drivers to be hidden.

Oh you had it on your site already :slol: thanks Mastro

[edit] I had a look and the person who did that pack indeed removed the driver from the texture. Just did it more properly than me as to avoid Z-fighting.

Why do I want to hide the drivers? The fact is that TDR 2000 Super Mod is a combined version of MAX - Pack and Nosebleed Pack. And some machines are not included in the MAX-Pack. And so I want to remove the drivers, and improve the quality of the cars.

Removing the driver? Extracted the TGA texture out of the PAK with pakrat2, opened it in Photoshop (I guess Gimp, Paint Shop Pro, etc are good too) and made the driver part completely white in the alpha channel.

What doesn't work with the RegalThunder..? Removing the driver from the texture?
It's because the .tx files for the driver (Valentine_head/_legs/_torso.tga) are not set to use transparency. You must open the three .tx files with an hex editor and change the 00 byte at 0x0000000C to 01. (these three textures can be completely transparent / black alpha) I attach an example.

To have 1024x1024 texture in place of a 512x512 one, you also have to hex-edit the .tx file. The sizes of the texture are specified in there. Right after the material name you've got 0002 0002, this means 512x512. Change this to 0004 0004 for 1024x1024. No need to change the texture name by the way.

(moved this here)

Nothing in particular happened to Beroc I guess, he just moved on to other stuff. However he really was the showrunner of TDR modding, so it kinda died with him gone. There are not video tutorials or anything. Just the same resources we had back then: 3dsMax R3.1 with the TDR plugin, and the tutorials from LOD3D which can be found here: https://rr2000.cwaboard.co.uk/tutorials#tdr

I'm currently looking at putting a car into TDR again, we will see how far I'll go :slol:
