Things you just hate in C2
Things you just hate in C2
I didn't find a more suitable section for a topic like this.
Carmageddon II is a great game, in my opinion it's more enjoyable than TDR.
But there are several things that bothered me when I learned the physics of the game and I would like to raise them now.
First: The power-ups. what could be more annoying than getting your power-up picked up by a dead corpse of a pedestrian, or any other map object.
Second: The breakable materials (i.e. glass, gates). This is something that isn't so easy to notice. Take the Funfair (amusement park) level for example, it's full of breakable gates, and after around 10 minutes of playing, those gates become completely solid and unbreakable. There was even one time I wasted myself by trying to get through the gate (embarrassing). The same issue with the glass in the Airport level.
Third: The Aircraft Carrier level (the ship) is the only level that I hate in C2. The main reason is because the AI cars, for some reason, somehow manage to get to the lowest surface of the Ship (the area with the admiral mission) and never get out of there. Only in rare cases they get teleported outside (perhaps the same way they get inside). The second, and the not so significant reason, is that you waste some good money on that level because of all the restorations you make.
How about you? what things annoy you in the game?

Re: Things you just hate in C2
I have to agree with you on the Second and Third points, I especially hate the aircraft levels too. But the powerups I don't mind so much. It's sorta like getting "denied" in Halo, meh.
I don't like any missions, period. I wish they never introduced those.
Something that bugs me, especially during replays, is how the peds sort of "rewind". They'll be running along and all of a sudden they're 10 feet back, right where they were a few seconds ago. It looks pretty stupid.
I do like that the AI opponents don't always stick to the path, but sometimes they just shoot off in a straight line in some random direction and end up stuck in some god awful part of the map - underwater or stuck against a wall. After a minute or two of getting stuck I always thought they ought to respawn somewhere.
Edit: Thread moved to new location. (Rants)

Re: Things you just hate in C2
The fact the AI make little to no effort in trying to kill each other sort of defeats the purpose of the game. That said, if they did, the levels would be a hell of a lot shorter.
I have to agree about the missions. I can't stand them either. One of the missions I could nearly NEVER get past was the one on the airport level where you have to kill the peds up in the control tower. I nearly never managed to get up there from the ramp. I spent many hours shouting abuse at the screen trying to get up to the control tower.

pssshh, that is what kangaroo on command and electro-bastard ray were for.
that's right, I cheat and I'm proud of it. If I wanted to work at something and get frustrated for it, I'd clock back in at work and at least get paid for it.
I second the hating of the aircraft carrier levels. the only way I found to beat them was either use wall-climber and "fall" into the lower hallways, or IWISHICOULDFLYRIGHTUPTOTHESKY and float my way in.
I don't mind the zombie-peds picking up powerups, but when my still attached but badly deformed and dangling bumper is what steals the powerup I get agrivated. its still connected to the car after all.
Physics-wise, I adjusted the master gravity so the cars finally spend more time on the ground than in the air.
The missions were annoying. except for the cop one, but after a while I put the fat bastard minivan into the cop slot, and cranked the softness up to like 12 and the aggression up and said, come get some.
that one directional barrier in the first beaver city level, perpendicular to the road, that almost looks like an opponent right up until you shear your car in half at 300mph.
The fact that I can't get the dang thing to run on this computer, I have to set it up on one of my old win98se boxes.
meh, that's about all I can think of.

In that particular mission, as well as other missions, none of the power-ups work. Even when you try to use the cheats.

Are you sure? because I used both of them before..
if its in the text that its turned off, I probably turned them on.. I dunno..
been a long time since I've played, so I can't remember

I dunno, maybe I didn't, but I know it was the easiest way to get the zombie admiral on the carrier.
I'd also freeze the timer so I wouldn't have to worry about trying to hurry.
I did the magic search and found my post for gravity adjustment.

Re: Things you just hate in C2
Nice to hear people using the search. Here, have a cookie.
There are a few things I don't like, either. Two mission things are the hard to get peds and the first mission, the "time trial" one. I really didn't like that one.
If there is ever a new Carmageddon and they get the bright idea to add missions again, they should all be Carmageddon-themed and not be mandatory to do, having the option to skip. Though there should be some sort of special bonus if you do complete them.

Re: Things you just hate in C2
woo, cookie! nom nom nom.
I had to keep re-running races until I could afford the purple piledriver. that was the only car I could get around the track in time. (without cheats)
what really got me was the one near the end, where you have to run all over blowing up oil derricks while 10 or 11 opponents try to cream you. It was hard enough finding them all let alone getting lined up on a plunger without someone hitting you
and that dang rooftop satellite one. That was the one that forced me into cheat mode. what was it, like the second or third?
once I put that silly little K-9 robot dog in place of the quarry truck. It was almost harder. you could find it, and hit it, but it is so light and small, you basically played golf with it while it sat there laughing at you at 96% health

Re: Things you just hate in C2
I know what you mean. I use to have the R/C car as an opponent and it would just get thrown about, rather than crushed! Even the slaughter mortars did only so much!
Which reminds me of another point. I don't really like how a vehicles wheels don't effect other vehicles. They just go through and have no traction.
Also, on the note of traction, vehicles can't have more than two wheels driven. Any more is just visual. This is a problem on fully tracked vehicles, only having traction from a small area, rather than all along the track as it should be.

Re: Things you just hate in C2
I agree the following are a bit annoying:
- Powerups being collected by loose part / corpse / opponent
- Fragile materials turning into uncrushable after reaching the limit
- Opponents roaming in the unreachable area in the carrier-level
- Traction not being applied correctly with fully tracked vehicles, and against opponent car bodies
- The limit of two driven wheels only
And I'll add:
- The lack of developing time preventing Stainless from finishing C2 'properly' (eg. improve the missions, since those were mentioned)
- The lack of smoothness of the road slopes, because of the optimization needed back in 1998 - eg. in the desert roads/ground
- The lack of level-of-detail optimization, except for the opponent car models
- The lack of advanced lighting system for the environments
- The following two facts especially when using a steering wheel:
-- Can't lock the brakes even though the brake pedal may be fully depressed
-- Can't accelerate very well when being even slightly pushed from the side by an opponent (except for the wheelspin-key, kind of)
And one about the original Carmageddon - C1 used to occasionally have a bug where a single opponent seemed to remain immobile judging by map image screen, but teleported away if you got close. When it didn't though, you couldn't see jack of his/her vehicle, instead just a flame burning one feet above the ground. This bug, while active, prevented you from finishing the race by wasting all opponents - an annoyance.

Re: Things you just hate in C2
I didn't realize the glass at the airport did the same thing as the fence around the funfair,
That may be a way to get the powerups on the glass roof of the terminal.
before it has always been 20 minutes worth of trial and error
trying to get the car to land soft enough not to break through
or with judicious use of afterburner and kangaroo crash through the
ups before breaking through the ceiling.
I'll have to dig my old box out of storage and give it a whirl.

Oh man, that's the first bug I instantly thought of when seeing this thread. Maybe 50% of the time I played the C2 desert map one driver would keep teleporting away from me.
Re: Things you just hate in C2
Yup... Powerup-purloining-pedestrian-pucks, crackhead AI cars, tele-friggin-porting opponents, "I ain't gonna break anymore"/respawned gates, and that god-damned......"whateverthehellitis" that makes your car just spontaneously and spectacularly waste itself for no apparent reason where there's nothing to hit!!!???!!!

Re: Things you just hate in C2
I agree with your 2nd and 3d suggestions. Yeah, really uncrushable walls of Funfair cost my cars a lot of damage. And that bug makes the whole level so inconvenient to roll on... And the ship level never was one of my favourites(truly, it's the 1st in my own shitlist ).
There was something else bugging... oh, yeah, it's the AI. There's practically no chance to makle a cool duel with an AI car in C2, if you know what I mean... The opponent status tend to be in constant flux, e.g. the raging truck wants to kill me and hits me two times and when I want to hit back the opponent satus bar says me that he's running scared or get stuck or something like this . So.

Re: Things you just hate in C2
I'll agree with all your points since they annoy me too.
One thing that's really frustrating is the El Morte Desert races where you all start in a grid but no matter what vehicle you're in, the AI cars just seem to bully you into submission and it's frustrating as all hell. I hate wasting money on recoveries (and am not keen on using the cheats).
Then there's the fact that my Carmageddon seems to crash out a lot since I reinstalled my computer and I'm not sure why. Perhaps it's always crashed this much but I didn't notice it before...

Wasn't there a way of disabling the missions? I'm sure I remember a cheat or a patch or something.
