Strange Hobby

Post by Evil Blarg »

I have this strange hobby of collecting slang name for certain people. This doesn't mean I spend my day trying to upgrade the vocabulary of the KKK, mind you.

Let me just clear it up with an example.

I was born part English, part Dutch. So in slang, I'd be part Limey and part something-or-other.

In Dutch I know a bunch of these types of slang words, but I like 'em better in English - those sound less racist. Plus, I can use 'em in the stories I write (but never finish - I'm good, but not that good), which I prefer to write in English - easier.

Let me share the one I already have - let me know if there are defenite no-no's in there.

English - Limey

Irish - Paddy

American - Yank

Australian - Ocker

German - Kraut (might be over the edge)

Birmingham (England) - Brummy

I suppose this gets the idea there. So to emphasise: I'm not looking for racial slurs, just things you'd affectionately call your foreign friend, except for "kraut" and "brummy" they were all tested and approved.

Australians call people from England 'Poms' - the name was originally used by us to call /them/ poms (Prisoners Of [Her] Majesty) - because they were... then they were all "Technically, we're free, and you're pom's" - so it turned around...

New Zealand - Kiwi's

Chinese - Chinks

Right, right. This is very good so far. A couple of them I knew, but forgot.

Me personally, I'm curious as to what the Dutch are too.

Yeah, What the Dutch are called- I'm curious, too.

Some more:

Irish=Mick

Polish=Polack

Central-American=Guacamole or just "Guac"

Japanese=Nip

Me? I'm part Limey, part Kraut, and part Native American (Dunno what ya call them except "Indians"

I'm interested in what slang names are used to call some other people from some of the other countries that aren't in the 'mainstream'.

Well, it's still strange that we're not called Hollanders or Neteherlanders like we call ourselves in Dutch.

All I know for sure for the Dutch is "Kaaskop", litterally translated to English that would be "Cheesehead".

If you use your imagination though, we could be cowboys, clogwalkers... Hmm, that would be it off the top of my head.

As far as "Injuns" go, those are the real rednecks. Except "redneck" to describe an Indian (as in Native American) is charged with racism. Which is what I'm trying not to be, for a change.

I'm quite sure there's something for just about every country on Earth. People have the imagination for it. Overhere in Holland they change all the city names during carnaval (not as in Rio, but a peasant version of carnaval - rather sad. We get drunk, watch a nightmare-inducing parade and then beat someone into the hospital).

No, I don't like carnaval very much.

Actually, according to the pictures on most black-metal albums, you guys all dress in black, paint your (naturall blonde) hair black and growl at eachother during satanic masses.

Might have something to do with those longer nights.

Ah yeah, I love that one. And the accent.

Great Britain's got one of the best selections of accents and dialects.

Hey Matt, useless trivia for ya.

Did you know the Celts actually had a similar name for Manchester. They called it Mancetter, which meant something along the lines of: Where the blood mixed with chariot-wheels.

I'd have to look up the exact translation, but it's along those lines.
