nobby wrote:That speedo looks gorgeous Toxic! I'm sure the standard dials in a Beetle are almost the same as the early 911 dials, and so I also recall how bloody hopeless they are at night. I'd have LOVED to have that sort of look in my '74 3.0L RS lookalike! Would've matched the red rear rollcage and 3-point harness perfectly (ahh, I miss that car...).
It had two bulbs either side, with little rubber caps on to turn them green while also blocking most of the light! And if I took the rubbers(!) off then I got a sickly yellow light that was bright enough to see the speedo by but made me want to punch a random stranger in the head (not necessarily a bad thing...)!

I whipped it out (the speedo, not my penis! Though that's not very visible in the dark either... or in daylight), took the front off, inserted a small led strip wired into the original bulb circuit, and can now go past speed cameras with a bit more confidence ;-)

RS lookylikey? You wide boy :-P

Wide boy? Oy! Couldn't be further from the truth... er-hem.

Ahh... The heady days of dual Porker ownership (it didn't last long, believe me..!)

I admit I'm not one for spending hundreds of K on original rare motors... But I did blow £12K getting a replacement 2.8L magnesium alloy engine built (by Porker specialists Tom Watson Racing) for my "lookylikey" after I blew up the original engine, shortly after buying the car, showing it off to a colleague... God the thing sounded like a knackered VDub bus after it had sheared a big end bolt and thrown a shower of shrapnel through the crankcase! :)

After the rebuild (with extensive engine/gearbox work), the resultant lightweight rocket was lovely, but the mechanical fuel injection was always going out of tune and in the end I sold it on at a big loss (my Porker ownership story) to a Porsche Club mate.

(BTW - if you right click the pic and view it at full size in a new window, you'll spot the stripy blanket on the passenger seat in the ol' RS... That was for so our dog Lily was comfy travelling in the car. :D)

Nowadays, I find that big Mercs are the way to go. Even if you do find the boot flooded after a heroically monsoon-like Crimbo lay-up...

I don't think Plod would take kindly to big metal spikes on a vehicle ;-)

Why the secrecy? Cos I'm a fugitive from the law, for a crime I most certainly did commit... honest :-P

I'm getting curious too now Toxic, where you from boy?

So we could meet up, me with my virgintastic-white-cuddly beetle (LOL) and you with the Carmageddon beetle!

Or I could take pictures of your beetle (I'm a freelance photographer) ;)

Tomorrow I'm gonna drop the 1600 '1960' engine out of my beetle... the previous owner put the wrong kind of bolts on the engine for the generator.

How did I found out? My beetle started screaming (generator bearing), so i'm going to replace it now.

I just love the simplicity of beetle technology, I only start complaining about sheet metal work and welding and such!

The love child formed from your cars would be a site to behold!

Speedo looks great btw!

Speaking of old Stainless cars, who owned the Lancia Stratos I'm sure I've seen in some pictures at the farm?

That's a beautifully built replica owned by my old school-mate Ian (second name held back in the modern style of paranoia that something horrible will happen to him if I post his full name). He also owns a fantastic Land Rover Forward Control 101. What a lucky man.

I suspect he is from America. I remember he posted links somewhere to online shops based in America. I just can't believe he gets away with real metal spikes :D

I've had an idea on how I can improve my mind numbingly ordinary black Corsa C SXI. I'm gonna look into having some custom decals made up. You know how stereotypical modders like to show the brand names of their mods with a line of decals on the door or wing. Well I'm gonna do the same with my top 5 games. Also Intel inside logo changed to gamer inside, I brake for rainbows, blood splatter coming from the front wheels & of course a few Carma stickers from the zazzle store. May take me a while to get it all done since it is not a top priority but by the end of the year I should have pics to post. May even take till the end of next year but I've had the vision now so it will happen sooner or later...

I remember reading about that car and the builder years ago in a magazine.

Found a small internet-article about him, he is actually quite known guy.

Yeah, u can see Bernt Karlsson in some episodes both in American Hotrod, in the body shop at Boyd Coddington, and also in West coast customs as a custom builder for the older cars.

Its a cool car, but not the typical carmageddon vehicle.

However, Black slotmags would be awesome on ur black bubble, Toxic. Or some spikes on ur already awesome looking wheels

I almost bought some slotmags a few years ago, and very cheap too!, but when I measured the offset they would have stuck out so far as to be highly illegal (wouldn't have passed an mot and would probably have got some interest from the constabulary) :-/

Ok, it was more the fact that the offset meant they wouldn't fit under the front wings :-P

So, after some modification to it, I can have my third brake light back! :-D

The light used to look like this...

Strange little game. Full of branding, too.

Had to do a bit of redesigning for the light unit, the new eyes battery compartment/cover is slightly different than the old one so I couldn't just swap it over... I won't put any pics of the work up, that would just bore people :-P

Fitted and working :-D
