Carmageddon 1 models?

Post by spacebug »

So, I was thinking of trying to compile a papercraft version of Stig O'sore's Volkswerker. I extracted the relevant texture files using carmagedit.

I didn't realise these textures would all be square, and the game stretches them to fit the models, so I don't know how to work out the correct dimensions. The side view seems to be roughly 2:1 to give a good side profile of the car, but I have no idea how wide to make the car in comparison.

How are the models stored in the game? Is there a program I can use to view it? I'm not even sure which file holds the information and how to interpret it. Anybody know how to do this?

Thanks

Hmmm. No reply, but someone edited my post O_o Well, I'll give this another shot in case any newer people know. I'm guessing the model data would be in stig.dat. Should I start messing about with a calculator and a hex editor, or has someone already figured this out? :)

Also, I found this image http://pages.videotron.com/faucon/pics/cars/stigosor.jpg which looks much better resolution than the 64x64 pixel maps in the game data. Anyone know if there are higher res maps available somewhere, or was this just an artists impression?

thanks

That is ingame shot from original so I think it's not higher resolution.

IOS/Android port have improved textures. Maybe you can use those. Open with Errol's Flummery. If cant open cars from mobile version, then download Trent's C1 cars. Exactly same models and textures as Mobile but in C:R format which Flummery supports. There are also texture tool but I don't remember what it is called.

Thanks, that was incredibly helpful! I've got the original carma model loaded and it's looking shiny!

The image I posted above, I'm pretty certain it's not a screenshot. Even playing the high res version of the original game doesn't give me screenshots of that vehicle with such a nice texture. Well, I guess it'll probably remain a mystery.

But the texture from the Trent's archive, that's a very nice re-do of the whole thing, so maybe that will be more helpful.

Now to figure out how to turn this into paper! :)

That picture was a "render" from before the initial C1 release iirc. You can still access these pictures on the official Carma page on sci.co.uk if you use the webarchive. There's one depicting ED101's jet and the complete form of Tanka :)

Using the iOS model and texture to build papercraft is certainly the best idea. Those textures were made in 2005 or so for the Gizmondo release and are based on the original textures with a paintover.

Do you use Pepakura for papercrafting from 3D?

I'm never seen those pics elsewhere than X-Cult. http://www.x-cult.org/games/232/Carmageddon/243/Prerelease_Car_Images/

Edit. Tried SCI sites with Wayback machine. Didn't found pic of Wolksverker but here you go: http://web.archive.org/web/19970215000000*/http://sci.co.uk

Propably somewhere 1996-1998.

Edit 2.

Found it: http://web.archive.org/web/19980131040225/http://www.sci.co.uk/carmageddon/vehicles.html

I've only just got to the point of looking at what papercrafting tools that are available. Up until then I was concentrating on seeing if it was possible to get the model information in the first place :) . I downloaded Pepakura demo yesterday and also this one http://www.papercraft3d.com/upc/index.aspx which can import files from a format that Flummery exports. But I haven't been able to get the textures loading on the imported model yet.

I'll do some more playing around today and see where it gets me.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Another way you could get the C1 models is extracting them form the Re-Volt mod.

All you'll have to do is import the model with Zmod 1.7b
You May have to select the link manually
