C2 is screwed?

Post by Alan »

My C2 recently stopped working for some unknown reason. So I installed a new one, removed the stock cars, repalcing them with addons (done this before with no problems). I also changed the first and third races in the first race group with Autopilot's track and Bleak City. I did this also in my old game with no problems. When I go to start a track, I hit start and the game crashes to the desktop. If I run it in software mode I get the error: "Cant load car resolution independant file". This Happens mainly on races with opponents. If I pick a race which is a mission with no opponents it works. The cars I have installed are all good working cars, yet this odd problem happens. Has anyone got an idea what causes this? I've tried everything I can think of. It's pissing me off!! :supermad: :suicide:

Probably one of the cars that you have installed is messed up in some way.. only thing you can try is run a race with no opponents - do so for every car you have installed, when the game crashes - you know which one is likely being naughty.

Mr. Monkey: Yup, I tried it as I just installed it, worked perfectly.

Pilot: I checked the cars, they were the exact ones I had in my old game, I never had a problem with them. Nevertheless, I removed all but a few cars, leaving known good cars in there, same thing happened.. Wierd, I've butchered my C2 dozens of times and never had this problem!

What defines how many cars you can have per system? Maybe it for some reason changed for you.

I'm not sure, but I tried it with as few as 10 and as many as 63, same thing happened both ways..

im not very good with c2, but maybe you accidently deleted a file or .txt? you have checked to see if all the files that should be there are there (besides the cars you deleted)

Did you delete the 32x20x8 + 64x48x8 folders which contain eagle3.txt files in your CARS folder by any chance? I think I removed those things before thinking i'd never need em and I got that same sorta error.

I just checked and those folders are still in the Cars folder. I just tried it again using one non-eagle car on a mission without opponents and it worked fine, went to the next race and it crashed. Wierd.

I dont think it's an addon car related problem though, these are all cars I've used for some time without problems..

what i think its is,( but may be wrong) is you have a car put in with carstockalypse but you dont have the folder in the cars folder or anywhere, then you start a race the game trys to load this car with no file and there you go, i think this because i had a lot of addon cars put into carstockalypse moved over then i messed with thatcars folder and screwed it up so i just delted the folder put never removed it with carstockalypse. and now i am getting this error, so i went and cleaned it up leaving only the cars with folders in the game. im not very intellegent so i may be way off.

Actually you're not far off at all! For the hell of it I started comparing the .c2c files I had with the folders in the CARS folder. I noticed several car folders were missing. I didnt see how that was possible as when I copied the old CARS folder from my old game to the new game I copied the entire folder, not car by car. So somehow it left a group of cars out. I tried 2 races so far and it seems to work.. Thanks to all who replied with suggestions! Must keep testing..

AH! OK. C2 picked at random at least one of those missing cars as opponets for each race that crashed-OR you picked one of the missing ones.

It can't load what isn't there. Makes sense.

hmmm.. i have never got this before, but i dont think i have played c2 enough to get many errors, and that really wierd, you didnt donwload anyhting sense you had it working, and now all the sudden it starts to do thius. i have had hackers get on my comp before and still some wierd stuff from me before, as in files from my game, but im sure thats not what happened, that only happened to me back in the dayb where i used to run kazaa a lot. all i can suggest is to once again make sure all the files and .txt and stuff like that is where it should be and im sure you have alreadyu done this. its hard to say that somethings wrong when you dont get an error box or anything cause you cant run the sw program, hmm..., i would suggest that you reinstall the game but into a diferent directory then just move the files you need in the game that doesnt work right now to the new one you reinstalled and then run the new, (and im sure you know this but just so i dont get any comments, make sure you deleted the old one  ) and thats all i ahve to say. oh and sorry if i have any typos, im kida in a hurry and i cant proofread all i typed right now.

Yup, I ran a virus scan just in case, nothing turned up and I also tried a bunch of other programs, everything seems to work. Its just restricted to this damn defective buggy game (which is also my favorite)! I just reinstalled it too! :supermad:

Do you use the compatibility options, and if yes, have you made the settings permanent? Sometimes windows reverts/loses settings for no good reason.

By compatibility options you mean Windows95, ME, etc? It's at 95 although I have XP, thats where it's always been , though. If you mean graphical options, nope I never clicked the checkbox that always uses the same settings.

Have you tried replacing the .exes again yet? I seem to remember that C2 sometimes opens its own .exe during the game(something from the dev version that they forgot to close, I guess) and under certain circumstances, can screw itself up if it exits the wrong way.

I tried new EXE's too, yup. The damn thing still wont work! There are no viruses, no anything here that should cause this!! I hate this game!!! I'll have to reinstall it AGAIN!!? Any other ideas!? :supermad:

*UPDATE*

I JUST NOW installed the game off the cd and it doesnt work ! I get the carma2_hw.exe error and a lovely box that comes up and says:

AppName: carma2_hw.exe Appver: 0.0.0.0 Modname: ntdll.dll

ModVer: 5.1.2600.1217 Offset:00019ecd

Does this mean anything? I'd say the CD was the problem but I ran my game installed off this same cd for months and it worked, and when I installed it the first time it went back in its case, in the box back on the shelf!

maybe the cd got scratched right in the spot for this error to happen so whenn you download it, its like playing a scratch3ed cd, you skip paret of the music, so maybe you skipped part of the download, i recommened to borrow a friends cd and try to download it with his. but besides that i dont know.
