C2 on W2k once again

Post by Numbwheels »

I tried all of the remedies for the W2K problem with C2. I've tried V2 and NO-CD crack. C2 runs in Software mode! but when i try D3D it exists with an error "Could not reference memory xxxx:xxxx "couldnot be read"" stuff like that. Strangely, this error appreas to when I just launch the launcher but it doesn't quit if I press "OK". My specs are: W2K Pro, GeForce 2MX, DX 8.1, Detanator 23.11. Strangely enough, I had problems with C2 on Windows 98se too since I upgraded to latest Detonator drivers. Under W98se it would run in D3D but then suddenly exit or cause BSD. My problem with w2k I described above.

BTW, Carma2 demo works flawlessly under W2k in D3D mode, wtf?

Help!!

Did you install SP2? I don't actually remember if I got C2 to work after SP1 or-2, but you should have it installed as a matter of general principle!

If you have it and it doesn't work, then I don't know, but Nvidia doesn't seem to be great when it comes to writing drivers....

Just my $.02.

When drivers make trouble maybe you can reinstall directX

I did the above thing and now it works (THX), but now, is there a way to play with a joystick (a steering wheel [Sidewinder Precision Racing Wheel])

ok, i'm having problems with win2k as well, i have a voodoo2 and a geforce 2 ultra, the game works fine under software and glide, but it says that carma.exe generated errors every time i try to run under d3d, my microsoft sidewinder was plugged in and it didn't work, so i unplugged it after reading this, but that didn't remedy the problem, any other ideas?

thanks

I also have Win 2K and can't get Carmageddon 2 to work. It ran the first time I installed it, but then it never worked again. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and even deleting all related files and registry entries but nothing works. Yes I also tried all of the patches. After a while I gave up.

Lately though I've been suffering from major Carmageddon 2 withdrawals, so I started messing around with trying to get C2 to run on Win 2K... again. I think that it is trying to run under glide (3dfx) for some *ucked-up reason; I'm using a GeForce 2 Ti.

Here are my notes: (like they'll do any good)

I double click Carma2.exe and get error: "Carma2_hw.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program."

I double click Carma2_hw.exe and get error: "BRender error detected: Failure: Could not reference image glide2x"

I say hmmm, and do a search for "glide2x".

These files pop up: Carma2.exe, 3dfx_win.bdd, hardware_3dfx.bdd (They are all in Carmageddon 2 Carpocalypse Now folder)

I then rename (or delete, whatever) 3dfx_win.bdd and hardware_3dfx.bdd, and try to run C2 again. Error changes to: "BRender error detected: Failure: Unable to allocate Main Front Screen."

I don't know what to do next so I say dammit, like twelve times.

I also noticed something in the registry, under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SCi\Carmageddon2] , five new entries are added the first time you try to run Carma 2. I tried to delete them but they come back every time you try to start C2. Entry names are things like "Driver" "DrvGuid" "DevGuid" "Flags" and "ProcessId". I get the feeling that these are not normal, and may be related to the problem somehow.

Damn, I wish someone could write a working patch, I WANNA SPLAT PEDS !!!!!

start carma2.exe with the /setup switch, then it will show you the option menu.

Anyways, I can't get my gamepad to work either. Maybe it's not DrectX 8 compatible.

As weird as it may seem, uplugging the game controller works. I couldnt get C2 to work with W2K, then unplugged my MS Sidewinder USB wheel, and now the game runs perfect. Thanks for the advice!!

Well, I got Carmageddon 2 to work... And I have shown myself just how much I love Carmageddon 2 at the same time.

I actually went through formatting and removing Win 2k, then installing Win ME and Win 2k on separate partitions, for a dual boot. That was two and-a-half days of hellish installs, restarts, downloads, restarts, updates, and restarts. Now I have Win ME for running Carmageddon 2, and Win 2k for everything else.... All of that just to play C2 again. IT WAS WORTH IT, HAHAHAHA !!!

Damn I love this game. Damn I hate Windows Millenium.

Well, now I'm off to see what has been happening in the past year while I was gone. Hmm, I think I'll start by downloading some cars !!
