Still need help with CarEd!!!

Post by Rekker »

I still can't get my car working! I still get the: "Can't load car resolution. Independant file" error. I have checked all the tiff files and components and I even get this error without editing the .wam file.

What's wrong this time?

Please, anyone, help me!

try going throght the car and make totally sure that you have grouped all the parts right and all the textures are the right size and resolution.

I have done that, but even if a texture was wrong wouldn't there be an error come up in the status window, or wouldn't the texture be red on the car?

Is there possibly anything else I'm missing?

C2 will forgive some .tif erors.. I've run cars with NO textures and it looks just red, but all there..

A .tif that is the wrong size will crap the car on you, a .tif that is the wrong color depth, same thing.. If ya have a component that calls for a .tif that isn't there, same thing.. If you have a .tif that has one half a byte even a little corrupted and you forgot to pray to the pixelmap gods that day first thing bright and early, same thing...

Try this... Try deleting the pix8 and pix16 folders in that car's folder and let C2 make new ones..(MAKE SURE ya got a tiffrgb folder in there first!-OTHERWISE, don't do this!!!!)

Sometimes C2 will screw up when it makes .tif files (pix8 for software mode-pix16 for hardware mode)--so give it another chance to redeem itself..

I'll give my car one last try tomorrow. If it doesn't work, would anyone want to have a copy of it to see what's wrong with it?

Thanks! I'll send it to you. The .wam file is not complete because I kept deleting it. The last time I used the WamEd program and had some problems. After the first time I couldn't change the number of smashable textures in the editor and also I wrote the number of components (the part that says: "component #x") manually because WamEd only wrote the first six. The .wam file doeesn't have any smashable textures although I tried to fix some but it still didn't work.

Anyway, thanks again.

If the textures work fine in CarEd, is there any possibility that they don't work in the game? Also, what are the basic requirements that the "Group Components" section needs? What could go wrong there?

As far as I can figure out, Grouping components prolly has somethin' to do with where CarEd puts it's idea of where the Bounding Box goes-and also determines the extent of the shadow under yer car prolly by way of that. Quoting Slayer:" No component or group can have more than 1000 polys"

I make cars that have from 3000+-5000+ polys and shitloads of components (well, up to a point where K_Max_crush_datas is reached or exceeded.. It also groups stuff together like wheel components, door components, etc. so they act as one when activated or affected in the game. But I don't see where it would cause a texture problem.

The CarEd.Html help file specifically addresses this problem with car resolution-independant files. Check it out.

A few things that might be wrong...

1: In your component groups, the main group has to be first on the list.

2: No 2 components in the same group can share the same texture, or i think thats how it goes...

3: Your rear wheels should be name BRwheel and BLwheel, no RRwheel and RLwheel.

Well, i dont know what else to tell ya, lol

Are you sure no 2 components can use the same texture? I'll check it out.

Are you sure the contents of the ..\cared\<carname> folder are exactly the same as the contents of the ..\cars\<carname> folder?

Roach: My textures are 128x128. Isn't that OK?

AgentOrange: I used to have textures with long names and they screwed up the game but I shortened them. I even shortened the names in CarEd.

eric: No, not exactly. Does it matter? Well, sometimes I had them the same but it didn't work.

Today I deleted the .wam file in the ...\cars\... folder like the CarEd tutorial said so the but the car STILL didn't work so the problem isn't there. I guess the problem is in the textures or the scr. file. Can anyone please provide as much info as they can for textures?

If there's no .WAM file in the ..\cars\<carname> folder I'm sure It won't work.

The name of the model and the name of the cars/.. folder have to be the precise same.. I don't know if it will fix the texture problem, but maybe it's a bit of help.

AgentOrange: The name is the same.

This time I tried something different. I deleted all the .tif files and all the textures in the component edit except for 1 and it STIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLL didn't work. It gave me the SAME error: "Can't load car resolution.Independant file."!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been there too.

What helped me : let carstockalypse pull the car out of C2, delete the directory of your car in C2, delete the yourcar.txt in the root, delete (or move to other dir) ALL your carfiles at CarEd except for the .obj, then start CarEd and do all compiling and texturing again. This is sort of a clean start but I do not know if you have done this so maybe this is a silly answer. It worked at my place! Don't let this thing keep you from working on good things.

See previous message.

Well, I mean the yourcar.C2C instead of

yourcar.txt in the root of C2.

But of you deleted a yourcar.txt, never mind.

I've done that, but I haven't re-textured.

My textures are 128x128, but I've heard things said about the colour depth. What does that have to be. Could there be an error in the .OBJ file?

Did you have someone testing your .obj?

I thought you did, reading the messages above but you can mail me too.

And : Make sure that you car is causing the problem. In case you installed a hunderd extra cars chances

are that another random (or defined explicit) car hangs the game. Modify the races.txt at a level and enter that you want two opponents, then define two explicit opponent cars which you have seen before in-game. Test the level with you driving a "not your car" which you have also seen in-game. If the game runs and it doesn't the next time while driving "your car" then your car is definitely causing the problem. Nothing new though but now you're sure.
