Fifty-Somethin' - 1953 Hudson Hornet - Calling all carnuts

Post by AdR »

Been here and there these past few months but here I am ready to do some 3D modelling for C2 (finally!) Decided to go for a '53 Hudson Hornet, want to make a stock and custom version of it, and I'm just getting started. I'm looking to see if I can catch the attention of those who really knows about real cars... I'm talking about Deep Blue or Alan... gonna need your help on this one, so if you're willing to go along with me, make sure to leave your reply  I'll need mostly help on the references, ideas for the custom version, etc... Already have some of my own, but I find it hard to find info on the chassis, engine, etc... seen a couple of pics but that's it. Ok, so I'll post any progress here as soon as I start with it, I'll leave a pic for those who don't know what I'm talking about :P

Happy new year everybody!

Any help is welcomed  for what I know right now it came with a straight 6 308ci engine, but dunno about the other options, if there were. The custom will have a V8, that's for sure.

Thats a fine choice of car! A salvage yard near here had the very same car a few years back. Wish it was still there I'd go get pics for you! Here's a start:

Ebay auction for a 52 (very similar)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 4514260097

Here's another, older looking custom, but there are some ideas for you:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 4514260097

Some good pictures of a stock green one here (model)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 6941233999

Here's more pics: Pics!

Thats all so far, I'll find more. As for custom ideas, you cant lose with Lake pipes, moon hubcaps, big buggy whip antenna on the back, all period 50's stuff. I'll search for more stuff.

heres a `52....

hudson offered a "sever use" package that you could buy and use for stock car racing. this one has a 308ci six-aylinder, and was driven by the race driver Herb Thomas in the fifties.

Yeah, these used to be the best cars on the track back on those days, and it came with the most powerful production straight 6 engine, 180 hp on the "twin hornet" version.

Thanks for all the info! I already started working on it, decided to go with the "hollywood" version wich has a different roof with no b-pillar and looks a lot better

Nice choice.. I imagine I'll be much forward to this one. 50's cars are great, my new favorite era lately actually. There isnt really much in the way of 50's cars made at all, except some 'drunken' looking ones. ive been wanting to make a few myself also, but its hard to feel motivated the way things are around here lately.. perhaps this will change that!

I'd love to see more cars like this one around here! Been meaning to make something from this era for quite some time, since there aren't many around.

A sneak preview while we're at it...

The front section needs a bit more of a general curve - atm it's a bit too square.

Not necessarily.. once theres a texture on there it'll look perfect, good texturing covers all really. Why add a buncha extra polies when you wont even need to? If it was strictly for rendering purposes you know he'd poly it up, this is for play!

Nice job on the grill too!

I'd love to see more cars like this one around here!

What happened to our Mopar freak? Hehe, just joking, I'd love to see more 50s cars too, as the only bigger collection of those are the ones Slayer build looong ago and they're kinda a bit outdated.

But as I'm a muscle car freak I won't be any help on those, lol.

Btw: i loved your idea of making the grille go into the front on the Tigerclaw and did it like that in the ingame version too. But this is off-topic, don't go any further about it, a new post for the Tigerclaw will follow soon.

@qwerty: I'll guess it'll end up with 5 or 6k no more than that, gonna reduce the polycount once all the geometry is done.

@alan: The whitewalls are a texture now  and I'll make sure to make a texture for each part, so you can come up with a nice rust skin  also it'll look better for the stock racing (nascar) version.

@MCF: well, this isn't far from a mopar actually... Hudson and Nash formed AMC, and the AMC's were powered with chrysler engines... not to mention that the actual engines of the cherokee are AMC

@the rest: thanks for the comments! here's another preview, modelled the chassis, frame and some other "boring" parts :P

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH! Hell yes! 50's cars! 50's cars! Oh hell yeah I'm so tired of eating RICE w/Bling sauce! AdR-That thing absofuckinlutely ROCKS!

I remember 50's cars when they were still pretty much regularly on the roads...People kept cars a lot longer back then than they do nowadays.

'Course their cars were built better-and gas was cheaper, too...

Auto-Don't get discouraged, dude. I been waitin' for 50s cars for awhile now! I tried makin a couple late 40s-early 50s cars awhile back-but it was right before that "Lame and the Ridiculous" movie came out and everybody hadda have a wind-up toy car with a shit wing and a fart cannon on it "Yo-ing" up the place.... Anyways...My oldies were made before people were open to the idea. I started 'em in the muscle-car craze and gave up in the rice-a-roni craze.

So, like...I'm like the long-haired noble-faired leaping gnome at the Ludwig Van Beethoven concert waving my stone Bic lighter inna air screamin' "Do the Fifth Symphony!!! C'mon DO IT!....He ain't doin' it....Hey ya mutha!"

Only in this case insteada the Fifth Symphony-it's 50's cars I'm lookin' for.

If ya need stuff to consider-I could stand to see:

'53 Oldsmobile (four door)

'51 Ford Tudor Custom (I had one a these)

YOUR version of a '51 Henry J (Mine sucked)

'59 Chevy Impala

Between you an' James and AdR-we'd hafta then get us a track with a drive-in, eh? (Wait? din't somebody already make one a those? With a big hole fulla peds in the middle...Kinda like I76-ish track?

I wisht I hadna lost that one.

Anyways, I'm rambling....and salivating at the prospect of 50's cars...

I second the motion!

While we're at it, Slayer made a quite superb 59 Bel Air a while ago, available @ Crashoc.

@Db: thanks! and hell yeah, we need more late 40's - 50's stuff! a 50's themed map... that'll be somethin' that's a nice list of rides there... though I personally prefer the '53 olds in the 2dr version

maybe the "rice era" is over and now it's time to go back in time? talkin' about it, I came across something that might catch the attention of someone familiar with us... check the attachment, that car has "autopilot" written all over it  it's a 1959 Nash Metro.

Anyways... back to bussiness.

Thats one bitchin car! Yes if it would be possible to get separate left and right door, fender and quarter textures that would be great! If I made a map that's what I'd do, 50's style, with an old diner, drive-in, stuff like that. But yeah 50's cars, early 50's with the more rounded bodies to the late 50's with panoramic windshields and fins, it was a great era from a design standpoint! And yes, Nash Metro's are kickass!
