Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing CarEd
Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing CarEd
What with lotsa people asking how to install CarEd over the years, I figured a sticky on the subject might be a good idea. Resta you guys feel free to contribute tips/tricks. I've installed CarEd on a bunch of machines and This method always seems to work.
OOOOOOKAAAAAAAYYYYY... Here we go.
The Java3D proggy may or may not install to the correct folder, yours may be correct depending on what version you have, so look carefully at the default install path-if it doesn't end in "\bin", CarEd might not work. I had CarEd 1.12 installed for a couple years and one day it screwed up. I figured "Why not upgrade?" and downloaded the new Java progs and CarEd 1.13. Didn't work until I noticed the default install path for Java3D was different than the old version and fixed it.
Install the big Java runtime program first. Stay with the default install path that it displays.
THEN, install the smaller Java3d program. Here's where ya hafta pay attention....
IT wants to install itself in C:\Program Files\Javasoft\Jre\1.2
Uh-uh. Wrong. So you change the install path to C:\Program Files\Javasoft\Jre\1.2\bin and hit install.
When that's done, reboot your computer.
Then unzip Cared.zip into C:\Program Files\Javasoft\Jre\1.2\bin (Notice that's twice we've put stuff in the "bin" folder.)
Now, navigate to C:\Program Files\Javasoft\Jre\1.2\bin and create a shortcut to Cared.bat
Then cut/paste that shortcut to your desktop or somewheres easy to find so ya don't have to go huntin' for it when ya wanna use it.
All done. Fire Cared up and make stuff.

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing CarEd
Thats funny, I never needed no special instructions or precedures to get everything working right.
I install the JRE first (The one bigger in size), with the default it suggests, then I install the next one and I stick that where it wants to go by default - "add to this JRE".
Also, I can stick car ed where ever the hell I wanna stick it and it operates fine, never had to put it in any specific place.

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing CarEd
Hmm... Guess ya got lucky then. I'm following the exact instructions Andy (C2 BMW Z3 guy) gave me when he got me into carmaking. Also I noticed that the newer version of the Java3d proggy had the wrong install path when I got it and it didn't work until I changed it. The JRE always installs right. It's the Java3d prog that went to the wrong place, initially.
Maybe somebody caught the glitch and fixed it by now-but it doesn't hurt to check for the right destination path anyways, just to be sure.
WE know where it goes-however it goes to work for us-I'm just trying to provide basic instructions for people who have not ever done it before so we don't have to keep going thru long, protracted discussions over and over again on how to install CarEd.

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing CarEd
No no no! You don't need things so complicated. Install JRE into the default directory (no changes needed). After that instal 3D extension into default directory as well (it always picks the correct one itself). Put CarEd wherever you want it does not matter at all provided you have all the directories of it organized the way they are in CarEd zip file.
Get all the Java software at The Sprayshop. They've go everything needed to set CarEd up.

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing CarEd
OK, everybody's got a different version.
Like I keep saying.....The way I did it-IT WORKS EVERY TIME-on EVERY COMP I've installed it on.
YES I used the files from TSS.
When they were first put up, the Java3d prog installed to the wrong directory...again like I said previously, Someone at Sun Microsystems may have caught the error and fixed it since then.
To quote Chris Tucker: "Do youuuu understaaaand the words that are comin' outta my mouth?"
It's not complicated atall...I think the problem you guys are seeing with my post that makes it seem complicated can be summed up by Buzz's signature:

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing CarEd
Hmm... I installed java yesterday as I used CarEd for the first time on this computer. I think the problem we are having with these instructions, is that we've all done it with the defaults and it has been fine. Here is what I did:
I think the problem you guys are seeing with my post that makes it seem complicated
Install jre-1_2_2_011-win-i.exe to the default location, which is C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.2
Install java3d-1_2_1_04-win32-directx-rt.exe to the default location, I don't think it even said where. It may even be used for two runtime versions, as I think I have JRE1.4 for something else.
Put CarEd folder in C:\carma\progs, made a shortcut to cared.bat, and it runs.
Those are the files on TSS. Now I don't know if its better to use the opengl or directx java3d, I haven't tested this. On my old old computer that had a 3dfx card I used opengl, on the newer ones I've used directx, it doesn't seem to matter.

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
Hey I'd just like to share some input for vista/win7 users when all else fails, keep your older xp machine. seriously I tried to make this thing work in win7, no avail.
*EDIT* I take that all back, my brain started working and I figured a way for cared to work for 64 bit windows7 is all you have to do is have java installed only on the normal program files, not program files (86') or whatever it's called, and just use the files spray shop provided for cared.
also make sure the batch file is targeted in the right places.

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
Thank you, and yes I did, his situation was slightly different.
Because carED works fine in every other way, but it's just the 3d window that's gone, I tried the things he did for his problem but it didn't help.
here's pictures of what's happening, maybe someone understands from that what I'm missing here.
Here's how it looks like, 3d window is just blank
and here's what it says:
help is greatly appreciated!

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
Make sure that you have installed Java3D and that you did in the correct folder. Very important:
Files are available at RR: https://rr2000.cwaboard.co.uk/pc-files#c2
You must choose either the Direct3D one or the OpenGL one (if one doesn't work, try the other one, but not both at the same time).IT wants to install itself in C:\Program Files\Javasoft\Jre\1.2
Uh-uh. Wrong. So you change the install path to C:\Program Files\Javasoft\Jre\1.2\bin and hit install.

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
Thank you for the help toshiba!
The problem seems to be that my computer wont install the JRE 1.2. file, the unpack screen starts and stops but the installing program wont never start, but I'm trying to get it working by sending it to someone else, let him install it and then pack the files in rar file for me.
I tried with other java runtime enviroments but obviously didn't get them to work.
e: Fuu, the installshield wizard (or whatever it's using) wont open in windows 7 or 8, and none of my friends got an xp anymore.
If someone can get that java runtime enviroment 1.2. opened and installed, and then would be able to put the fully installed java runtime in a folder, compress it to zip or rar file, and in some sharing site (www.sendspace.com for example) I would be very very thankfull for that.
here's the link to the file: https://rr2000.cwaboard.co.uk/R4/PC/JRE_122.exe

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
FUCK YEAH IT FINALLY WORKS!
My friend got that java runtime finally opened and installed, and sent me the files, I installed them, then the direct x thingy, and CarEd 3d window finally showed it's blue 3d screen and works fine!
Here's the Java Runtime 1.2. files in rar file, if someone has the same problem, just remember to put them in a right path which is: C:\Program Files\Javasoft\Jre\1.2\
http://www.sendspace.com/file/8n0v3t
after that install direct3d or openGL, it didn't allow me to change the install path, so it goes to C:\program files (x86)\java\jre7\ you need to go and copy the files from bin and lib archives and copy them to your 1.2 bin and lib archives. (don't replace any folders, just copy the files from jre archive to folders in 1.2 with same names.)

Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
Hello,
I encountered different problem with making path to correct folder with Java. CarED readme provided us this information:
More or less accidentally, on my laptop Java files was installed (I didn't change that, damn) to somewhat different folder and correct path is: C:\Pliki programów (x86)\JavaSoft\JRE\1.2\bin\java.exe
(pliki programów means program files in polish) (and I installed Java 3D DirectX version and I did it for lulz because I have no idea which version would be better for my configuration/system/etc. I hope if I finally manage to run CarED it will work).
So now I have to change path in cared.bat. And I have no idea, how Pliki programów (x86) should be written there. For sure path with progra~1 leads to nowhere.
Or maybe I should just reinstall everything into different folder?
~~~~
Ok, I managed to solve this problem. I've reinstalled Java stuff to C:\Javastuff then corrected path in .bat file.
(it should be placed into spoiler but it seems there isn't such option or I didn't find it; what is Strikethrough text anyway?)To run the editor, you should probably create a shortcut to the batch file that can
be found in this zip archive called cared.bat. You may need to enter the full path
to the java.exe in the batch file. It should look something like this:
c:\progra~1\javasoft\jre\1.2\bin\java -classpath cared.jar CarEd
Make sure the cared.jar and the cared.bat files are in the same directory. If
you launch the .BAT file and a DOS window appears and then quickly disappears,
you will need to open up a DOS prompt, cd to the directory containing the
cared.bat and then type cared to see what the problem is.
Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
Good you got it working already. I was about to say you should try to adapt the path to c:\pilki~1 or similar.
Considering a handful of persons still use CarEd now and then, maybe we should improve the package. Like a bundle that would install the JRE+J3D properly and then CarEd with respective paths.
Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
Yeah, glad you have it working. The simpler the path the better, especially one that doesn't contain spaces or special characters like parenthesis etc.
Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
Hey can anyone explain this to me? i'm using win7 64bit again, and Im assuming the new nvidia drivers to my graphics card is incompatible or something.
Because everything allegedly loads up yet the little word balloon at the bottom righthand corner of the screen says "display changed to windows 7 basic"
and the two screens are acting as if they are trying to merge with the wallpaper when the mouse scrolls over. I tried disabling windows compisition and the bells and whistles of the properties in right clicking on it, but no luck.
Also I really owe this forum a model of that ford escort truck thing, its been almost a year, : (
Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
Hey I've been complaining about cared and "graphics driver issues" and it not working. I fixed it.
Turn explorer.exe off via task manager( the program that handles the icons and start menu)
then in task manager do new task then use that to open cared,
then turn explorer on.
Its the biggest Whut of the century but it works for that "sink into the icons and background" glitch.
Re: Never-fail (well, usually) instructions for installing C
Hello, I tried packing an all-in-one zip with CarEd and the java files it requires:
https://rr2000.cwaboard.co.uk/R4/PC/CarEd_AIO.zip
Maybe it'll be simpler to get working?
It works here without having to install java etc. Just extract and run the exe.
