Skin Concept
ok, ive learned that a lot can be done with the funk and images. now, my concept is to have skins that change color using the funk. but, there is some drawbacks:
1: for a nice, slow fading effect, it would take up at least 15-20 frames and tiffs.
2: if you make it fade, you can only have one tiff for the body color because it takes up a lot
but, there is the fast color changing, which i dont like all that much. but a good thing about it is that it only takes up a frame for each color you want it to change. like blue, green, yellow, black. that would only take up 4 tiffs.
and another drawback for the funk idea, is that it seems to just stop after about 10-15mins of playing. this is mostly caused by crashing, and repairing.
i will be experimenting around with it later on. ill post a pic here as well.
so, tell me what you think of this concept.

I did this a while back! I made a car and textured with a chromed animated firey texture, it looked like the car was burning as it flew down the road! It was bitchin!! I think!!

It would obviously be far better if you could make the texture animation controlled i.e. so that it doesn't change when the car is stopped... and changes proportional to the car's speed. You know what I mean... otherwise, it'd look a bit stupid imo, having the flip-colour changing even tho the car isn't moving.

...this idea is shitty. i did it, and it looked so bad, i gave up. my new concept is to have the rear end come up in flames using the funk. or the drivers hair, or some part of the car, mabey the interior of a junker car? i do plan on makin some junk/apoc skins...mabey something on the car would look good on fire?
BTW, im talkin about fire like the exaust on AdR's CARMAro

i got a way to use youre idea
u can use it for a flasher like make the "haserds" go on or somthing like anamaited flashing flasher lights
that would be good, add a hotkey to the game and car so they can flash independentlay or at the saime time
and u get signal lights!

An interesting idea... this and the original flip paint thing would require controlled textures (i.e. having 'controlled' as a line of the funk). I think that's possible... perhaps someone who knows more about funks can help me out here.

most buses have digital route display's witch, when the info is too big, toggle or just change words,
your idea would worck for this cause its not a graduall change, its a suden chage of word

I think I did something like it before. I think all I did was made a crazy gradient to be used on that chrome kind of texturing. Like, a gradient with mostly red, and a small amount of blue. If you rotated the camera, it took a while, but the color eventually turned blue, probably at about the rate you want. 'Course, I'm talking out of my ass.

Mr Lunch: yes that would work pretty well I would have thought, good one. Of course is would require all the flip-painted sections of the car to use chroming, which would be a little annoying. Was it a linear gradient? You mentioned crazy...

If I remember, it was a horizontal gradient, and the primary color was on top, covering like, 75-90% of the image. The bottom was the secondary color you want it to change to.

great! well since FB did bring it up, i hope he responds to this soon cause it would be good on many buses that are around like a TO vertion of econos newlook that im thinkin of, i think thats the only place they changed the newlooks displays to digital

Hmm, to clarify: I'm talking to @ob about the 'animated' images, and to FB about the idea of chromed skin with that gradient that Mr Lunch mentioned. Not sure if that came across... but yes I do recall that initially FB's idea was to use animated textures, but I think this idea is probably better, if it works. For flip paint, that is. Not for bus signs. Good!

well FB was aying that its not as easy to do the gradiant... so we can do this till the gradient is figurd out

Hmm, well if you can texture all the flip-paint parts of the car with just one texture, then its easy to do the chroming thing. And if the display thing is those alternating bus textures, then you can look up Econo's Deflectar like I said, or I believe that magic 8-ball uses the same technique. Then you can look in the funks section for the relevant info. So yes, that is how you can learn how to do it, like you said.

but, i have a new one though. it is to merge all the body parts
(doors, trunks, hoods, fenders) the map it as one whole object.
then, split it up(the body). this way, the whole body has the whole texture,
not just single parts. the reason i want to do this is because
when you put the chrome effect on a door, it ruins the skin.
you know what im talkin about.

I don't think you need to merge all the body parts, if you're using PT2 to do the chrome effect then you can select the polys that you want to have that texture, should work out fine. That is, if you selected all the polys you wanted before you applied the texture... it'd have the same effect (mapping it all together) but without needing to merge the body parts, and lose the funky falling off bits.

Oh, yes you are correct (that's stupid, wonder why they did that)... but you can apply a texture to multiple components at once... that doesn't work I take it...

I think you misunderstood... I was saying that you can apply a texture to more than one component at once (just select all required components using pick parts), but that doing that probably doesn't solve the problem of the chrome effect not being smooth over the whole car.

Yep, he's right...it works, but I'd only use it to test things. Apparently, applying a material to objects instead of faces has some unforeseen consequences....like wiping off the material when you amalgamate those objects. "Lasso" selection of faces works fine if you're in a hurry, though.

Oh, I thought it was meant as "pick 2 objects, then goto pick faces and select any or all of the faces on the selected objects"...but no such luck.
