Random crashing

Post by Alex_Dynamite »

I'm having a bit of a problem with my secondary computer. I hadn't been using the computer much, but lately i find myself using it more lately. Rather randomly, the program I'm using will crash. It could be within a few minutes or a few hours. It started after I had the hard drive replaced. I've checked things and I keep it clean(software). It happens most commonly when I'm browsing the internet. I've tried using different browsers, but made no difference. The best I can figure out is there's an improper driver, but I haven't seen any errors pointing me to one.

It's an Intel Celleron processor, 512 mb RAM, Windows XP, HP combo DVD/CD/CDR, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 graphics card, and ASUS motherboard. I forgot what the hard drive is.

Any ideas?

When you say crashing, does it just freeze or is there the blue screen of death?

Could be a dodgy driver somewhere. You could backup all your stuff and format the computer, and re-install Windows onto it. If it keeps doing it after that, then it could be a hardware problem.

Is the hard drive brand new or used?

The program usually just spontaneously closes, only sometimes with an error message first.

The hard drive was new.

I've uninstalled an old mouse driver/program I wasn't using. I'll see if it helps.

If you haven't done so, after removing the mouse driver, try updating Windows. If that still doesn't do it, if you have a couple sticks of ram lying around, swap it out with what's in the computer now.

Yes, it's usualy a Microsoft Crash Report, sometimes Firefox report.

So far, I haven't had another crash today, but it is pretty random.

If it happens again, I'll try to grab some info.

Well i don't get what's wrong with ur pc... Did you test it with antivirus? Try to find newer driver incase.

There can be other program whitch can couse crash. Try uninstall unneccassery applications, do full system cleanup, or try to reformat. Don't forget to backup. Do other programs running propertly or they crash too?

P.s. try CCleaner

If you get crash report there could be posibly info whitch module may couse crash. Check other running services (Type services.msc in Run command), disable uneaded. Also you can improve performance disabling a part of effects (Load My Computer=>Properties=>Advanced Tab=>Performance, Open Settings Window. The properties menu is on context from Computer icon.)

Yes, I have an anti-virus(part of an internet security program) on here and it hasn't found anything.

No, I haven't done any warez/torrent downloads on this computer.

I've checked the drivers and updates and there appears to be no conflicts or updates.

I haven't had any crashes since I removed the mouse program/driver(came with a cheap mouse).

If it does happen again, I'll grab the crash info.

Thank you all for your help.

If it's your mouse that is the problem, you should just get a bog-standard USB Microsoft Optical Intellimouse, I've got one and it has never put me wrong (had it for years, I think it was £4.99).

I think it's about time i had something good to say about Microsoft...
