in tdr what did the programers use to make the colission maps?

Polygons?
And by that answer I'm guessing you're talking about the "collision mesh". Which is only a low poly mesh. Around a car, for example.

Erm... No...
Programmers used something called an AABB trees, which isnt just polygons, it is a data structure based on a hierarchal maping of an entire object. So you could find the exact polygon you were looking for within about 6 to 8 steps as opposed to checking each polygon against the position you need it. A bit more complex the just polygons.
