It comes to this.. oh dear [car in works?]

Post by autopilot »

Seeing that ive over played c2 so much that im actually finding it more enjoyable to play TDR these days (who woulda thought!) I thought I would "broaden my horizons".. Im gonna attempt a TDR vehicle now! Thanks to a dat to 3ds converted Tony told me about.. I wont be needing to learn how to use MAX much as far as modelling goes... so thats a plus - seeing that I never have much patience for that type of stuff.. with that in mind, my first tdr car shouldnt be as hopeless as my first c2 car! I still gotta long ways to go.. I finished the car pretty much and was fiddling around with it in max, and I see im gonna have to go back and fix some things.. Once I get past that phaze im gonna need to figure out the set up and stuff, and see if I can get this sucker in game.

Image

There it is.. its just a fictional car, and its just something I modelled quickly (I dont want to spend so much time on something that may not work out in the end!) Kinda looks like a volvo In some ways guess.. all drawn textures!

Many thanks to Tony whom has helped me out a great deal with some max stuff and knowledge thus far, I wouldnt be able to do this without He.. as there isnt any tdr how-to out there what so ever!

It's hard in the beginning, but after a few tries it's getting easier. It's also depending on how complicated structure the hiearchy will be. The more "extra junk" will make it like a bigger mess, but not if you got everything under controll. I like a lot of "extra junk", so I'll usually go for the more complicated and messier setup

Short said.. Basic setup - easy

I know of the SDK thing of course, and ive read over it a couple of times, but its not exactly thorough, or much in depth.. as it states its "not a tutorial". im sure in most cases doing some things are easier than they seem, but having someone explain it to you makes it a lot easier.

I think setting up a car for c2 is a lot easier by the looks of it.. I noticed for TDR youve gotta make all kinds of collision meshes and stuff which you dont need to do in c2 (even collision meshes around the stuff you want to fall off the car!) other then a bounding box defined in text in the cars txt file, you dont have to do any of that stuff in c2!

Sports cars suck! If this works out ok, a real car I will likely make in the future will probably be somewhat similar to this.. maybe a dodge aries if I can find good photoreal textures (wish I saved the ones from my c2 making).

I did all the meshes I believe im supposed to do.. and fixed the stuff that needed to be fixed.. so now I will read the SDK and figure out the other things im supposed to probably do and deal with that, and hopefully get it in game in some form!

heres a more updated picture for now:

Diggin' the car auto. It's a little too post-apoc for my tastes, but the modelling looks nice and solid. Not that i play TDR anymore, but i look forward to seeing this finished

It might be a little while.. the tutorial I was sent that beroc made was only a 'simple' one.. nothing much explained other then a basic set up (no detachables or anything), tony told me he did another much more detailed one explaining everything, and will send me that when he can get ahold of it. Im not really interested in just doing guess work in the set up and saying "well i hope this is right" and not being totally sure, as it most likely wouldnt be.

Aye, i hear you. I always handed my complete models over to beroc for him to stick them ingame, i never fussed myself with learning the long and exhaustive setup process for TDR. It's much easier for C2, messing with the numbers is actually fun.

Shame on you TDA!

For letting poor Beroc do that hard and complex setup behind your vehicles..

Say.. Want something to do? Perhaps like a little mapping project?

I'm going home later this week or at the start of the next one. I'll be having access to all of the tutorials then. Sorry, for not making the one of my own I I said I could do. Some things changed and my free time vanished. The setup is not the hard part when building a TDR car. So you won't have a lot of problems with it I think. It Can take some time to get all things right from the beginning though. But I guess that change with time..

Yippeee.. as you can see its finally done. Actually, I shamefully sent it over to Beroc to set it up for me and get it in game  - So you can thank him for that.. otherwise you probably wouldnt get it at all.

I upped it at dtd, so you can get it now.. theres no mention of it on the main page cause I cant find the url to do that (its been a while).. so that'll have to wait till beast gets back to me.. but if you go to the tdr section you'll find it.

Lol, I was just at DTD and I saw the link to the car in the upper left corner and I wondered "how long has that been there." Didn't think it was just released.

Wow, this is a very nice car! It's a definite keeper!

Thanks, Beroc did the set up/handling stuff; I just made/textured it. Glad you like it though.

I believe I'll make a 60s Comet; the Mercury version of the Ford Fairlane for TDR sometime soon.
