Windows 7: Opinions

Post by The_Bollocks »

Well I downloaded and installed a dual boot of the final build OEM version a few days ago, and I've been trying it out since. It's the 64 bit Ultimate version. Well, so far, It's better than Vista (which wouldn't be difficult), even as been the 64 bit version, nearly all my devices run on it, with minimal compatibility issues. Still though, some 32 bit programs won't run on it (AutoCAD 2009 being one of them).

Games wise, I doesn't like portable games, especially those made portable using WMWare, which is a bit annoying. For installation games, both Fallout 3 and 2 (surprisingly) work fine. I still have yet to try C2, although I have a feeling it won't work at all.

The layout is a bit all over the place, then again, I used to the classic Windows 98 style menus.

As back up, I've Windows XP 32 bit as the other dual boot option!

Well, I've just brought a new laptop with 7 Home Premium on it, I've tried 7 Ultimate and here's a few pros and cons:

Pros.

The ability to move tabs around on the taskbar (always wanted that in XP)

The half window resizing (when you move a window outside of the screen it will resize it to half of the screen, very helpful)

It's stylish (even though I have the Win 7 theme on XP)

It's quite quick to be honest.

Cons.

Everything else...

I'm not familiar with it yet as I like XP and Ubuntu more.

Take a look at this (even though it has the pointless touch screen demonstration on it)

I use Taskbar Shuffle for that:

Works with the tray icons too

Well you need a run command to get the option for a quicklaunch area on the taskbar but after thats it's pretty smooth sailing. I haven't had any game issues really, runs smooth and it's very solid... plus windows7 finally killed the error I had with using the replay function in C1/C2.

The only thing I dont like is there are some similarities in the UAC system like Vista, luckily they're not nearly as annoying and it wont ask you for every single program.

I didn't like the start menu much to begin with, but now i can see its virtues. Opposed to digging through menus to run say Fraps (which was never really an issue because my XP was well organized) I just type "fra" and it shows up. I liked vista's interface better than XP's but there was alot crap with vista, this is like Vista sans sucking.

Well I know C2 works fine with 7 Ultimate 32bit but my new laptop have 7 Home Premium 64bit, so I'll have to try C2 on it when it comes... Home Premium doesn't have XP Mode which is really bloody annoying...

Their is another relatively minor but somewhat annoying bug I've discovered. It seems when I install any program, Windows Installer will just hang at the 'Preparing to install' screen for about 3 to 4 minutes, sometimes even more, without doing anything. After that, it will continue on with the installation.

At least the programs install though, eventually!

@ Razor: At least you don't have the 'Starter' version of Win 7. That has no additional features at all!

Apologies for double-posting, I'm now on 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium, on a brand new laptop that arrived this morning.

It's a Toshiba and it is full of trial software that no one ever wants... Uninstalling all of this crap is going to take a while, anyway, here are the specs of the laptop:

I just installed it on my "new" used comp, went with the 32bit version, been using xp forever but its easy enough to get used to not being super different or anything, transfering files from one computer to another and installing everything is a lot of time consuming mind numbing work though, especially since youve accumulated a good 5-6 years of your life on a machine. \anyway, sure hope c2 works on this thing.. havent played it in what seems like forever!

I've just tried out C2. It doesn't run very well, the game runs in a tiny window in the centre of the screen and is very jerky.

I guess I'll stick to XP for playing it.

This is very upsetting, it means I'm going to have to keep using remote desktop to play C2 as I can't use my laptop. :techsupport:

Wait what? You are actually having problems with C2 on 7 ? Works absolutely flawlessly here on my 64 bit version of Seven Ultimate.

I'm loving Windows 7. It was the right time to build a new computer, too. Upgraded to a Intel Core i5 w/ 4GB RAM and a 512MB GeForce 9800GT. I have Win7 Pro 64-bit and everything but my scanner works now.

C2 put up a fight though, but I got it working. You need the updated carma2_hw.exe file (I think it's the XP/no-CD version). Then right click on it and select properties and go to the Compatibility tab. Run the program in compatibility mode for Win98/ME and check "Run in 640x480 screen resolution". Then run carma2_hw.exe directly and providing you set up the glide wrapper correctly, C2 will run in the largest res specified in the glide wrapper and will have sound.

Actually any algorithm created to be processed ,calculated or executed by a computer is a program. So Windows 7 is most definitely a program. Also lol @ haters, you guys could atleast tell WHY you hate it instead of going RAAAAAGEEEE doublepost.
