Carmageddon - High Octane is Carmageddon 1 stripped version...or it was only sold in the US/North America.

It has eveything on the disc except some files were adjusted so that not every race was there..but some altering in the text files would show everything again like C1 itself.

However there was an addon for C1, which is called Carmageddon Splat Pack...got that one? I think Mastro had a link to download this image file

There's also no music in it.

And because of the missing tracks (which are only missing from the data\races.txt), the game ENDS only halfway through.

It's basically like a glorified DEMO...except it isn't free.

If you already have the full game there's absolutely NO reason to get this. :P

The only reason I have it is because it was the only version I could find around here for quite some time. Though later I did get the non-watered down version...which you already have, so why bother?! heh

But if you MUST have it, that version is all over ebay.

This thread is from 2007, not sure why it was ressurected by Alex. Tosh already said that there was a version called High Octane so not sure why this some sort of revelation.

Timmy: I need to use that gif more often

Carmageddon High Octane:

Image Image
(HO: LOGO.SMK, MIX_INTR.SMK)

Image Image
(HO: DEMO8.FLI, DEMOEND.SMK)

Image Image
(HO: LOADSCRN.PIX; NORMAL C1: LOADSCRN.PIX)

Image Image Image Image
(HO: PARTARGL.FLI, POW3.FLI, CHEVYCHA.FLI, OK.FLI [in game])

Image Image Image Image
(NORMAL C1: PARTARGL.FLI, POW3.FLI, CHEVYCHA.FLI, OK.FLI [in game])

Since there are many speculations (most correct, but not 100% accurate) I decided to do detailed compare.

Comparing High Octane to Carmageddon Max Pack:

- there is no Win95 version included (CARM95 dir)
- there is only one DOS VooDoo exec (MAINPROG.EXE) with clear parameter list, and two batch to run it with or without 3D acceleration (CARM3DFX.BAT, CARMA.BAT)
- network mode is locked (new DEMO8.FLI with C2 logo is shown, normally used only in demo)

Note: To enable network - new exec is required - for example from voodoo patch, from other full version patch or win95 version.

- all files from regular Carmageddon are included, but there are only first 14 tracks set up to play, when 22 are removed (only from RACES.TXT)

Note: To enable all tracks in game, jut replace RACES.TXT with proper decrypted file from other version of game (also add PROG.ACT to ACTORS sub-dir with "i am fiddling" line to make the file readable by game engine). You can use my Unofficial C1 Patch.

Edit: Patch updated, no more errors with High Octane Installation.

Note: All cars are in play.

- there are no CD audio sound tracks

Note: With win95 version of exec you can use wrapper to listen ogg music from HD. Or for any exec you can set the game to use HD FAKECD folder instead of CD (PATHS.TXT) or apply crack, then insert any music CD (playing tracks from 2 to 8).

Logo / more advertising:

- LOADSCRN.PIX new load screen with C2 adv, binary corrupted, so flashing twice in game and can't be opened in common tools without fix (it also contains palette, as some Splat Pack files)
- LOGO.SMK with High Octane game logo - playing on beginning
- MIX_INTR.SMK contains High Octane title, file is smaller, probably saved with stronger compression (?)
- DEMOEND.SMK - another adv of C2, shown at the end of race and on quit

Note: The C2 advertising made me confused which game I'm playing?

Censorship:

- OK Stimpson renamed to Juicy Jones (CHEVYCHA.FLI, OK.FLI), also blood on his shirt is replaced with orange juice (?)

Some corrections:

- ARMOUR changed to ARMOR (PARTARGL.FLI)
- LITRE changed to LITER (POW1.FLI, POW2.FLI, POW3.FLI, POW4.FLI, POW5.FLI)

Note: Most of new *.FLI files have miniature frame at the end (MINI) and using different file format which is not possible to open with common tools.

Boring mode:

- boring mode is set to robots, as should be (instead of broken zombies, as is in Max Pack)
- KSOUND.TXT (for boring mode "-robots") is set to robots

Other changes:

- Keyboard layout file (KEYBOARD.COK) is in different version (US)
- there are files for transparency (BLEND25.TAB, BLEND50.TAB, BLEND75.TAB) - the only C1 version shipped with transparency by default, I know
- old version of one font (NEWBIGGR.PIX without colon) is used, in Max Pack there is new version, but binary corrupted
- EVALU01.PIX, EVALU02.PIX are included - evaluation info, not displayed (also included in some other version of C1)

- there is a tool to create boot disk (BOOTME.EXE)
- AOL trial
- Ereg registration tool
- Cyber Patrol adv
- other useless execs (...EXE)

Things characteristic only for Max Pack:
(so here as in other versions not present [UK version have zombie and peds as in Max Pack, but sounds are replaced])

- there are no zombies (sprites Z*.PIX and sound Z*.WAV)
- some non English sounds non present (CHECKP.WAV, GO.WAV, HEY.WAV, IWIWAR.WAV, OUTOFT2.WAV)

Note: Some people believe that gore, zombie or robot (boring mode) version is the only version, but this is much worst to believe this is the only version... and don't know there is possibility to unlock more races. Some re-buying the game now and they are surprised that there are more tracks... So, as suicide_jockey suggested, the game should be named 'Low Octane'.

That's what I'm found so far.

I need to check why this version can't be used to install Splat Pack.

Edit2: This is not true that this version can't be used to install Splat Pack - I have installed it successfully, but with small problem, which is related to Splat Pack installer running on Windows in general, not to High Octane version. More details here.

I have found that High Octane not working with other Carmageddon CD when it's not full installed.

Hey, great post there QTZ! It really looks like High Octane was a lame attempt at cashing in more money from the american market before the launch of C2...

The editing of OK Stimpson was kinda normal there heh!

Comparing all text files I have found another different files:

Another one which affect game play is:
POWERUP.TXT

Code: Select all

(Second is from High Octane)

// Powerup 0
100 // Integer param #1 (minimum credits)
1000 // Integer param #2 (maximum credits)

// Powerup 0
500 // Integer param #1 (minimum credits)
1500 // Integer param #2 (maximum credits)

// Powerup 1
2000 // Integer param #1 (minimum credits)
10000 // Integer param #2 (maximum credits)

// Powerup 1
5000 // Integer param #1 (minimum credits)
15000 // Integer param #2 (maximum credits)

README.TXT

Code: Select all

CARMAGEDDON - README.TXT
July 8, 1997

CARMAGEDDON HIGH OCTANE - README.TXT
June 29, 1998

Also for High Octane network information is removed.
Other files are the same.

Edit: I have just found that binary corrupted file LOADSCRN.PIX cause most of other versions of execs to crash (want 2, got 2 error), so this file must be replaced (or fixed), when other exec is used!
