Challenge 1: 1930's Concept Car
1930's Concept Car:
Rules: First, pick a real life manufacturer which made cars back in the 30's. You can either pick an original car, or invent one in the stylings of that particular manufacturer. The concept may either be a new vehicle, based on that style, a stylized version of an original vehicle (concepted for modern day release) or modded original vehicle (Boydster). You must develop the body for the concept and wheels. You are limited to 2500 polygons for the body, you may make extra pieces for purchasables for Crashday. You are limited to 300 polygons per wheel. The vehicle cannot be textured, but notes should be posted in with your WIP's for any special texturing information. (like, this piece is to be textured to save polygons...)
Available Manufacturers:
Alfa Romeo
Bugatti
Buick
Cadillac
Chevrolet
Chrysler
Cunningham
DeSoto
Dodge
Duesenberg
Ferrari
Fiat
Ford
Hudson
Jaguar
Lancia
Maybach
Mercedes-Benz
Mercury
Nash
Oldsmobile
Opel
Packard
Plymouth
Pontiac
Porsche
REO
Studebaker
Toyota
Volkswagen
Willys
Time: You are alloted all the time you need to complete this model. The challenge will end on the Saturday, July 8, 2006 at 11:59:00. PM Beroc-Lord of Destruction with the finals before that time. Be sure to include polycounts, and I will post them in the forum for voting. Each member will then PM me thier vote, on Sunday, and I will post the results and announce the winner that evening. I will PM the winner with what they want to do for the next Challenge, and we can go from there.
Final Status: You must supply final pictures of body and wheels from at least 2 different angles. I (or you) will compile the 2 into 1 640x480 picture along with poly counts.
Good luck everybody in the first, of hopefully many Challenges.

Guess I am going to have to start a new one. aww well. (after I finish this one that is, I like the way it is turning out)
Sounds good anyway, I can't wait to get an idea.

Re: Challenge 1: 1930's Concept Car
Well, I dunno CarEd, but I am sure someone else does. So if anyone can fill in a small tutorial on how to make a wheel in CarEd.
Basically, I can tell you that I work with two points, duplicate them and rotate the new ones 90 degrees..makes kinda a diamond. select those 4 duplicate them and rotate them 30 degrees, duplicate the new ones again, and rotate another 30 degrees... That gives you 12 points... Duplicate all 12 and rotate 15 degrees and that gives you 24 points... enough to make the wheel... In max, I make triangles connecting them in a circle, then extrude the whole thing a couple of times... you get lots of points, lots of rows, which I resize and make into the shape of a wheel... 5 rows is generally what I do.
Then I can build the inside... There is a Max tut on LOD, dunno if that will help you near as much. TSS has some tutorials on CarEd, I am sure there are more out there, someplace.

Just nick a stock one from your pile of shits
Aslong as you edit it sufficiently. I mean, if you're only using the points arranged in a circle then it's not much of a deal, right?
(It's a bastard to make a circle in cared )

Re: Challenge 1: 1930's Concept Car
I don't think I've ever been able to make a perfect circle in CarEd, but the wheels I do aren't that far from a circle. I do what Beroc said. I take a point, copy/rotate it 180 degrees, then I take the two points, copy/rotate them 90 degrees, then take the four points and copy/rotate them 45 degrees, and so on, until I get something that look like a circle, then I copy the points to make another circle beside the first one and I get something that look like a wheel.

Re: Challenge 1: 1930's Concept Car
for a 16 sided circle say,
only thing is I dont know how to make wheels from scratch..
360 degrees = a circle, as we all know
so 360 divided by 16 (sides) = 22.5 (amount of rotation for each point)
plot a point raised on the y axis for example, but in the dead center of the z axis...you could plot it from the front view to do it
and iterate that point 15 times...with "pitch" using 22.5 for the amount each time.
and for the center point..you could again, plot it from the "front" view say, and leave the mouse where it is...in the main window (not the component edit one) look to the lower left where it spews those x y z numbers...take the one for y and write it down.
say it's like 0.006095648, take that, go to 'translate' for that point, and enter that number as the y value, but negative...so -0.006095648. that would put it in the dead center. might be off by a billionth of a decimal point, but not enough to be noticeable to the eye.
Annoying sure, but I'm just saying it's entirely possible to make perfectly round objects from scratch in car ed.
And it's kinda more rewarding or something?! heh

I took my cues from 1930's Buck Rogers type space ship
Ring of cylinders to spin.
Domes on top would be glass.
This is vector based app. Get's converted to polys when I export

It's sorta an old app called raydream 3d was made by MetaCreations.
I don't think they publish it anymore though.

Re: Challenge 1: 1930's Concept Car
I guess I am gonna throw a WIP in here myself... dunno exactly what I am going to do with it, I got some ideas.... I am going to start with a 1933 Deusenberg Boattail. If I make it into a retro mod, then it will change quite a bit,if I soup it up, it wont change that much. Deusies almost all looked alike, so making a true concept of a new vehicle for the era would be a bad thing.
Oh, it is peggin only 796 polys. Pretty basic right now... There is supposed to be alot of detail in these cars, so I don't know if I could get too much into it and still be in the running.
Heh, sounds like I am talking retro mod already... we will see.

Re: Challenge 1: 1930's Concept Car
Well, I am going with the retro look, so I am redoing the model... not much work in it. Just a little more difficult to get the "look" I want. Though, having done the original makes doing the rest just that much easier.
Basically, it is a lowered down, sleek looking version of the original, It even retains the old Boattail I am still only at around 740 polygons, so there is alot of work to be done. Lots of detail to be added. Course, for me, I gotta do the hood and trunk lines first. It needs to be functional before beautiful...

Oh, and guys, if you could convert your pics down to URL's it would clean up this tread alot. As there will be alot more people who are going to post stuff here.

Re: Challenge 1: 1930's Concept Car
smooth off the front engine section with the body... that is the biggest 30's thing. look at the pick, adn you will see. The old cars had less seating (width wise) Then... round the whole thing off a little more.
You can keep the stylized back wheel wells, but it should look smooth and flowing, you have it angular. Like it is ready to attack. I dunno, those are only my suggestions.. There is a marriage in there somewhere, I am sure you can make it work.

Re: Challenge 1: 1930's Concept Car
Err...I hope you made a backup of how it looked first?!
Who cares if it doesn't look like it's from the 30's? It looked much nicer before, in my opinion. Perhaps finish it as you apparently intended to at first, seperate from all this "challenge" hoopla?!

Re: Challenge 1: 1930's Concept Car
I agree, I want to drive that first version.
That looked great the was it was.
Otis P. Jivefunk would've loved that car too.

Re: Challenge 1: 1930's Concept Car
I totally agree, you should start off with a different model, that looked alot better as a 70's cadillac. You should start the model looking more like the 1930's.
I know, I know... upsetting, isnt it.
