Signature image sizes.

Post by Beast »

Right. This has been debated a lot in the past, we even at one point had a rule that limited the number of times you can use your signature in a thread.

However, I think that we can all agree that huge images used in signatures get annoying. Especialy when someone posts one line of reply, but then has a huge 10-15 (approximately) line signature.

So, in order to have some balance, we're having a new rule here at the CWA. The maximum acceptable size for a signature image will be 468x60. However, we will tolerate up to about 20 pixels more in any direction. However keep it sane and within reason.

Also, if you've got a more box-like signature (ie, 200x200 pixels), that's somewhat reasonable, and we won't complain. But try to stick to a more appropriate size. If anyone's curious if their signature image is too big, drop either me or Deep_Blue a PM with the pic, and we'll tell you whether it's appropriate.

We're not gonna run a too leash that's too tight - we're gonna be flexible as always, but don't overdo it. It just gets annoying.

Thanks for reading.

Your friendly neighbourhood admin and avid shower singer,

B.

another thing that is annoying is when there sig looks like there post with nothing to sepperate eachother, so you read there whole sig and then realize its there sig and not the post.

TIMMAH! is a reference to a handicapped character on South Park. Watch it sometime. It's funny.

I think the max sig size should be 100x500, because 70x468 is a bit smal...

468x60 is a standard banner size. It's a size used throughout the web for all kinds of banners, and I don't think we're being too demanding when asking for a standard banner size. It's more then enough to show whatever you want.

Suicide Jockey: 500x100 is too big. Please make your sig a tidbit smaller.

yeah i thought that was just a little too big. but you mean my normal sig pic right? just confriming this so i dont go threw all the mess for nothing. but i would agree 468x60 is a good size takes to long for my comp to load this shit. but owell i will just lower my sig pic size, it is a bit big.

EDIT: there how is that?

I was just wondering, is my sig-pic a problem? I don't have any way of knowing the pixel measurements of it as far as I know. So, I have to resort to asking... :help:

Banners are all the same for me, 468x60 is fine I'd say. But what bugs me a little more are the actual text lines in the sig, which also height to the post. Examples:

Beast:

[My mind is an information superhighway and it's rush hour all the time.]

[Driven To Destruction]

[Digital Phantasy]

[19010532]

Could this by any chance be:

[My mind is an information superhighway and it's rush hour all the time.]

[Driven To Destruction] , [Digital Phantasy] , [19010532]

Or "|"s or "/"s instead of ","s or something.

Or suicide_jockey:

imageshack

host your pics for free!

http://www.imageshack.us/

click it, i am advertisiing for them so just do it!

Could be like this:

Imageshack, host your pics for free! [http://www.imageshack.us/] Click it, i am advertising for them so just do it!

Maybe the "Click it" line could start another row, if necessary.

Things like that anyway, those two just were pretty good and quick to find cases since they were in this thread. But do you agree with my suggestions or do you think it looks 'bad'? (and if so, why?) IMO you just shouldn't forget the horizontal space in your posts... except that obviously pictures can't be inserted next to each other, only vertically - unless you use a image editor to combine them into a single image of course... in which case the links wouldn't work, though. Ah well.

Now this post has some height, but fortunately my sig is small.

I see your point, and it makes sence. But in defence of myself, my sig image is very small, and with the 4 lines of text, my total sig size is just around the limit that we have. We could get anal and measure the pixels, but I'm sure that's not required.

And as a matter of fact, I've been thinking of changing my sig, re-arranging it pretty much to what you said.

*EDIT* There, I never said I'm not open to suggestions

Isn't it more a question about it's size in kilobytes, rather than the size on the screen?

Though the view of an enormous pic taking up half the screen must be eliminated!

Hardly...

Animated GIFs are the only ones that are going to be anything stupidly large, and when they arrise there's usually an "Oi! No!" bouncing off the walls.

The main point of annoyance is when the post content is smaller than the signature, /or/ when the sig pic is just overpowering...

More noticable when, say, you've just finished reading to the bottom of the thread, and you scroll up to the top. All you'll seem to notice is the same big pic over and over

Granted, it might not be noticable on a larger screen res, but on a smaller one it makes all the difference.
