It's one of those deals where you can't tell which end is the front and which is the back.

...because they're equally as ugly.

not exactly!? of course i once said i was partial to beetles and the like...and disliked muscle cars (which for the most part i do). But, i find big ol' cars from the '40s - '70s to be pretty neat.

OHH... a road driveable space rocket

Would be a sweet model to have

i've just accidently found out that some people were even able to drive this weirdness. there were about 200 of them who had a chance to test the vehicle for three months. but since the results weren't that good most of these things were eliminated. it was no rocket as kru said just a laggy -mobile...

it's really one of the weirdest cars ever. just about everything's weird about it even the interior.

Aside from the deco on the transmission tunnel, I don't see anything weird about the interior. All the manufacturers were exploring alternatives to piston engines during the mid-50s/early '60s, Chrysler's idea was actually a feasibility study instead of just a showcar/prototype. The design wasn't strange at all, and except for the somewhat tortured rear, it wouldn't have looked too odd in the traffic of that era.

In fact, it looks a lot like a '66 T-Bird. Classy, not weird.

Hell, if you want strange, what about GM's Firebird prototypes:

web page

Firebird III here, the first 2 were even more odd, in a Jetsons way.

i don't think it looks that much like t-bird only if you compare their side views perhaps. front and back views are different. that turbine is terrible! the front is plain silly (owl eyes) and the back... the back is even worse because it looks damaged. t-bird looks way way better.

btw any ideas what are those 'volume tuners' on the back for? maybe for opening the boot?

Gee....I didn't say it looked EXACTLY like the T-Bird, just similar in more ways than not....look at the profile, the volumes , the way chrome accents are used....there are more similarities than difference. Yes, the bird looks better.

You're right, though....maybe the '63 is closer than the '66.

The "owl eyes" were either air intakes for the turbine, or were simply there to denote the mode of propulsion....as for the rear, I have no idea whether they had any function at all, except maybe a very agressive bumper setup.

Still, I dunno what gets you so worked-up about that car......

does 'worked-up' mean concerned/interested or something similar? if yes then no i'm not it's just an unusual car to me that's all.

Although Chrysler had input on the design obviously, the actual body design was done by Italin Ghia, which is also the reason most were destroyed after the test. Chrysler sent the chassis overseas and ghia put the bodies on. Since they were techanically "built" in Italy, chrysler would have to pay expensive duty fees to keep them in the U.S. so the goverment gave them temporary "green cards" you could say, which were good for 2 years or so after which the cars would have to be destroyed. Since the cars wern't being sold to anyone they would lose even for money on the duty fees for the already expensive project. Chrysler never intended to sell that particluar car to the public, it was just a test to see if their turbine engines would work in a normal evreyday car. Which they did, as far as i know none of the test cars had any major problems. Today i think there are 3 left 2 of which run and there 1 spare engine left in a chrysler building. I kinda like the design actually, I seen one on "my classic car" a while ago, seems to drive nice and sounds like a jet going down the road

Hey guys... come on... This Turbine is realy a nice car !!!!!!!

This car have his own style . It's just the most original car I ever saw!

I realy respect this car and I would pay a good money to have one of those in my garage.

Acctualy this colour is not the best colour but.... what the hell this is an old car... should look oldstyle.

It would be cool if you get one of those and modify it to make it trhow fire thru the "turbines" on the back.

Hey come on! Does anybody with modeling abylities want to make this... thing??!!!

Rover also made a gas turbine car back in 1961. It was called the Rover Turbine T4. Only a few were made.

1982 Ford Escort Mk3 1.3 L (restoration project)
1990 Nissan Micra K10 L (my first car, currently in long term storage)
1995 Ford Escort Mk6 1.3 CL (current everyday car)
