Nissan Murano transmission?
My friend told me the other day that the Nissan Murano has a transmission with an infinite number of gears. I spent a week wrapping my head around that trying to figure out how that'd work, and now I just bet my friend was blowing smoke up my ass, be it on purpose or not. And I can't find any info on the Murano tranny to prove him right or wrong, so I was wondering if anyone floating around the CWA boards knew of anything like this.
PS - If a car had an infinite number of gears, would it be devoid of a top speed then?
Thanks, crew.

Re: Nissan Murano transmission?
I think the tranny with infinite gears is a CVT (forgot what it stands for). It's basically a chain and cone setup. I don't know exactly how it works, but there is a limit on how fast it can go.

Re: Nissan Murano transmission?
Hmm....that don't sound right-lemme check into that-I'll get back to ya.
EDIT* Here ya go-
Nissan Murano road test with detailed trans info
CVT=Constantly Variable Transmission
Uses a steel belt and a set of pulleys, kinda like the old Honda 2 speed mopeds did. The pulleys moved farther apart to change the drive ratio to higher "gears" and closer together for lower "gears"
That way the belt is either running on a large diameter pulley (slower) or a small diameter pulley (faster) much like a multi-speed bicycle except by changing the sizes of the "V" in the middle of the pulleys instead of actually changing gears and bands-which BTW there are none in this transmission-your friend was right-so give him his smoke back

Didn't they also come in the Subaru Justy? More wheels than cylinders and yet it had a state-of-the-art hi-tech tranny. :P

Re: Nissan Murano transmission?
One of the new drivers where I work has a brand new one-it looks like it's got Richard Nixon's nose...That CVT is a right good idea tho. God help ya tho if that belt ever takes a dump.

Re: Nissan Murano transmission?
Aye-right efficient, those trannys are.
The Honda idea worked on flyweights and a screw, if I remember right (it was made well before ECMs).
When the RPM's changed in proportion to the load-the flyweights would screw or unscrew one side of the drive and the driven pulleys making the pulleys wider or narrower causing the belt to ride either higher up toward the outside, or lower down in the 'V' decreasing or increasing the diameters that the belt would ride on, effectively changing drive ratios according to speed and load.
They worked in kinda a 'push-pull' fashion...kinda neat watchin' 'em work. 'Bout time somebody put one a those setups in a car. The 'infinite number of gears' is in between lowest ratio and highest.

Re: Nissan Murano transmission?
one thing i have to say ur rignt im gonna get a bigblock when this rice machine breaks down..heh
Re: Nissan Murano transmission?
Well, if ya maintain it right (clean and tight=the secret to making an engine last forever)-you might be an old man by the time that happens.
Our Asian brethren build some righteous tough machinery nowadays.
Then you'll prolly be more like me-too fulla the goings-on of life to wanna race and take the chance of screwing up something that ya worked hard to keep.
(That won't stop ya from revving it up at stoplights, tho )
There's just something about age and pride that makes ya realize whatcha got when ya think back to the fact that you've bled on parts of your engine that you've worked on that'll never have to see the light of day again
