Discovering the secrets of Carmageddon 2's fonts

Post by Razor »

Whilst working on my C2 beta mod I've been fiddling with the fonts and SCROLLERS.TXT in particular, along the way I've discovered a few things, and documented them here:
http://r.carmajunkies.com/2015/04/07/ca ... re-a-pain/

and a bit of progress on my mod here:
http://r.carmajunkies.com/2015/04/07/font-progress/

Any feedback from those who have fiddled with fonts before is welcomed. Thanks

I don't have time to investigate this now, but it look like C2 demo is similar (same?) to what we have in C1, but full C2 version is more advanced. Due to work with translations I have edited fonts for C1 (some have very ugly national characters in original). The text file corresponding to PIX look same format as you have described here - you can find description somewhere in C1 or SP. There are also same .FNT files included in C2, but one of those look not even used in C1, when in C2 those look unused at all (as far as I remember those are loaded anyway). FNT files, as far as I know are BRender fonts. As you may know I have created editor for them, the PIX fonts, are not supported, but some look like generated from such .FNT files.

C2 demo builds were iindeed a lot closer to C1 than C2, some of the stuff was in there but mostly it was no where near as complicated and advanced as C2. Also about the unused things, you'll notice a lot of leftovers that go unused, I think it's safe to ignore the .FNT files as leftovers, the executable may rely on them (untested myself) so that could be why they're still there? Or just because Stainless.
