I love that idea. And I bet the original C2 'stick figure' peds would actually look better than the GTA peds would using this effect!

Meanwhile...

Just a quick try :heh:
I also think it would look better on the lowpoly peds, but I don't have them anymore (even on the iBook).

Oh, and Coffey, very nice screenshot !

heh, cool!
Now, this effect must double the poly count, yes? Another reason for low-poly peds

here's 2 generic peds - male and female, you can play with
http://coffey.polygonized.com/files/2_peds.zip
(Bismanbm.TWT & Holidahe.TWT)
I envisioned them using your Solar Flare effect - lit solid color with the black out line so they truly look like stick figures

Thanks for the peds :]

We must first see if the materials applied on a ped can go fulllit like the ones in a track, and I doubt it can :errr:

hmm, the c2 peds are so block-like that shading may be kinda interesting and cool - all hard edged and graphic looking?
I guess we'll have to see!

edit: don't forget Errol's templates for other peds http://www.toxic-ragers.co.uk/files.asp?root=114

'K, I've done some testing and I'm not sure it's that much of a good idea to think about that celshading trick too often~

First is with texture, second with only diffuse color and third with color as a texture.
I think the trick doesn't work that well on non-static objects.

But also...

I took some time to convert Coffeycup's Earl into a ped
I cleaned the model, turned it into quads as much as possible and set the smoothing groups. (also remapped the face a bit).
This optimized MAX Earl is also available as driver template.

Now it's up to Coffey to accept this mod :]

On another point, I figured that if the GTA Ped Pack doesn't look that good ingame, it's just because the models aren't very well converted and prepared : not really well textured, no smoothing groups, parts are badly severed (this is what causes those bumpy shadows), pivot points between the parts aren't well setup. I'm thinking about cleaning them correctly, etc. There are 4 different models I think (normal male and female and fat male and female), I'll see...

Well, I think the one with textures is best.

I was thinking that a stickman, might look better. Specially since with your experiment, the arms are a bit odd, (showing through eachother) With a stick man, this would be gone cause they'r black...

but anyhow, nice experiment. The Max Earl model looks great too, looks like he stept out of his car just then...

If the ped is solid black, there's no need to add a black outline.

I guess a thin white outline might be cool though.

@ Tosh: All the peds look geat, don't mind the bit of shading on the solid color ones. It'd be interesting to see what they look like in the Solar Flare map.

Earl ped is too funny! let it be known that the open source driver started out as a GTA ped.
I just cut him up and repositioned him as a driver. So he went from a pedestrian to a driver and, after a few DUI arrests, is back on foot.

So do what you will with Earl!

Release post then !

[DOWNLOAD]

Here's the template of the cel shaded ped : download.
Here's the template of Earl (aka driver3) for any version of MAX ranging from R3 to 9 : download.

@ Coffey : I think it'd be better if you could add a mirror of Earl's template on MacCarpoc as there's no appropriate section on RR2000 and you already have the former version of the template~
I'd see Earl the Ped amongst your peds as well~

Still ped related (I should split this thread~) :

I made an update on the AntLion.
I fixed the gaps between the members (the animation is still somwhat weird as it wasn't made for this model... but it's really better now, legs and arms stop flying through the air), tweaked the material lighting a bit, and changed the skin. Also boundingbox and stuff.

Redownload at RR2000.

@ Alex : Just install Carma-Life :heh:
